Supermotos

These are off-road bikes which have been modified for road use. They have 17inch front and rear wheels that come equipped with road tyres, they have larger brake discs that allow for more stopping power. Suspension is lowered and stiffened and the gearing is also changed for road use. They are a dual purpose bikes which means they are equally at home on loose gravel surfaces and smooth tarmac. Nearly all off-road bikes from 200cc up to 650cc can now be converted into a Supermoto however there are bike manufacturers making ready built models which are road legal.

Estimated Power 20bhp - 60bhp

Top Speed 100kph - 150kph

Price (New) From €8,000 up

Examples CCM R30, KTM 950SM, KTM 990 Super Duke, Yamaha XT660X, Husqvarna SM610S

Should I Buy One? These are not the most practical bikes for many reasons. The narrow seat width and high vibration may cause discomfort on journeys longer than 50 Kms, small petrol tanks mean frequent fuel stops and regular service intervals are needed as supermotos have high revving single cylinder engines . Put all this aside and you have a high octane hooligan bike that is both aggressive and light with looks to kill - if top end speed and long journeys are not your thing then these bikes are well worth considering.
